Tuesday morning came with beautiful blue skies, and we were so thankful since it had POURED on us coming into Washington D.C. the night before.
We took the Metro into town which the boys thought was pretty cool. They don't leave the doors open very long at the stops, and our stop was pretty crowded, so I was nervous we wouldn't all make it out at the same time.
Our plan was to get off at the Smithsonian stop, and then walk around and see all the monuments in the Mall area.
First off was the Washington monument. We hoped to be able to get tickets to go up to the top, but when we got there at 10:00 AM, they were already sold out. We would have to get there by 7:30 AM for tickets. No thanks.
As you see, Joseph was being cooperative for pictures, as usual. :-)
Wow, the Washington monument is TALL! I didn't have a wide enough angle lens to get the whole thing.
Next stop was the White House. Not too exciting because you can't get anywhere close to it.
I have a theory that having people in the pictures of all these tourist destinations makes for more interesting pictures. Well, this one is interesting, all right! Unlike Joseph, Mosey likes being in pictures. He just likes looking as weird as he possibly can.
Next we walked through the WWII Memorial on the way to the Lincoln Memorial.
Mosey found a family of geese waddling around the huge Washington Memorial reflecting pool. He and Joseph tried their darndest to catch the babies, but the only thing they succeeded in was getting the mommy goose spittin' mad (literally).
The Lincoln Memorial was Brigham's favorite of the day.
Too bad they couldn't climb up there on good old Abe's lap. Wouldn't that have been a cool picture?
The view from Lincoln Memorial.
On our walk through the FDR memorial, Joseph started finding these little caterpillars. By the time we got to the Jefferson Memorial, he had about 20. Mosey and Brigham joined in the fun, too, and it was a real crawl-fest for a while. Then, while we were in the Jefferson Memorial, a bunch of them accidentally-on-purpose got dropped on the floor. Not a good thing in a place where there are dozens of people walking around. It was caterpillar carnage, so sad.
The only other family picture proving I was actually on this trip. Joseph refused to look up and just asked me to erase him out of the picture before I post this. Sorry, buddy!
I had the best deal of the day, getting pushed in the wheelchair. The little boys were pretty good, and they must have walked several miles. For a while I attempted to hold all 3 boys on my lap while Ben pushed, but 150 lbs of boy on my lap was not my idea of a good time, so back to walking they went. They did get a little whiny on the way back, but overall, they were pretty good. I know it was a long day for them.
I had been worried we'd get into hot weather on this trip. I even brought these cooling vests with icepack inserts to wear. We didn't hit into any hot weather the entire time, and actually Washington D.C. was a little too cool for me, although it would have been perfect had I been walking around.
We rode the Metro home, stopped for Subway sandwiches, and then Ben took the boys down to the hotel pool. Fun day!

You are a very smart mom to realize that "less is definitely more" on sightseeing excursions with young children. I fear I have ruined many a fun day by trying to cram too much in. There is too much to do in Washington DC no matter how early you get up and how long you stay -- you'll never be able to see it all - so you were wise to know when to stop and go home! What a gorgeous day to see those amazing monuments!! Love, Mama
